AT WORK

How is restoration of such a monument actually done? What are the steps of the project? At what stage are we now? When will it be finished?

Research

The research is the first step. It includes all preparatory works aimed at getting to know the monument as thoroughly as possible, comprising its history, its original condition and how it has been transformed over the centuries. Often, we discover hidden treasures underground or behind layers of walls and plaster. Archaeologists and art historians, the researchers of the past, are joined by engineers and restorers in the process of diagnosing the condition of the monument and to decide on the interventions best suited to ensure its longevity.

Conceptualisation

The information gathered during research is processed during the highly complex planning stage. Based on a functional analysis of the entire archdiocesan complex, the architectural design has to reconcile the needs of everyday use and the modern technical requirements with the important aspects of conservation of the monument. The planning of the reconstruction of the buildings and the conceptualization and planning of the restoration of paintings and artefacts are equally complex and linked tasks that require close coordination. What can we show from the past? What should we emphasize and what should be kept in the background? We present the dilemmas, choices, and alternative solutions.

Execution

WIP '23 is not an exhibition in the classical sense. Its mission is to take advantage of the special opportunity for visitors to get close to buildings and artifacts during the process of their restoration and reconstruction and to experience the cultural heritage they carry through the stages of their preservation in a unique way. A significant part of the walking tours will take visitors through areas of construction where the works are temporarily halted or still in progress. WIP' 2023 will therefore be a chance of a lifetime opportunity for visitors to see the sites from a new, behind-the-scenes perspective.
